Pedestrian dies in Limassol traffic accident – Cyprus Mail

An 86-year-old man – Socratis Parmaxis – died on Friday afternoon after being hit by a car driven by another octogenarian in Limassol.

According to the Limassol police, Parmaxis was hit by a car driven by an 83-year-old man at around 2pm while crossing Nikos Pattichis avenue.

Parmaxis died soon after the accident, Limassol traffic police officer, Emilos Kafas said.

 He added that the driver holds a valid driver’s licence, and that his breathalyser test indicated zero alcohol in his system.

Police are investigating the conditions of the accident, he said.

This is the fourteenth fatal road accident in Limassol this year Kafas said, in which 16 people died.

He once more urged drivers to be alert when behind the wheel and to pay attention, especially to pedestrians.

Man killed in crash, motorway closed for hours (update 2) – Cyprus Mail

A motorcyclist was killed early on Tuesday morning in a crash on the Nicosia to Limassol motorway, police said.

The incident happened at around 5.45am near the GSP stadium in Nicosia. The man was rushed to Nicosia general hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the victim was Giorgos Christodoulou, 65, from Larnaca.

 Christodoulou’s motorbike was hit from behind by a taxi driven by a Turkish Cypriot, throwing him on the windshield, which was smashed, over the top and the rear windshield, that was also smashed, and onto the tarmac where it appeared, he was hit by a second vehicle.

Christodoulou had been wearing a helmet.

“It appears a vehicle that was following possibly hit him again. This vehicle is sought by police who is asking the public to help find it,” traffic police deputy chief Stelios Panayides said.

The accident forced the closure of the motorway for nearly four hours, causing chaos.

Long queues formed, and police instructed drivers to exit the motorway from the roundabout near the stadium and head to Limassol via the old Nicosia – Limassol road through Latsia.

The accident prompted far-right party Elam to make a political argument, issuing a statement calling for the closure of the crossing points with the north of Cyprus.

“This incident brings back to the limelight the huge problems arising from the opening of the crossing points,” the party said.

Four day remand for fatal hit-and-run suspect – in-cyprus.com

The Limassol Court on Friday remanded a pensioner suspected of being the driver in a hit-and-run accident that left a cyclist dead in custody for four days.

According to the police, the vehicle was tracked down and its 76-year-old driver, a Greek Cypriot man, arrested on Thursday. The car, a double-cabin truck, is undergoing tests to confirm it is the same one that hit cyclist Panagiotis Hadjinikolas, 33, from Zakaki.

Hadjinikolas was hit by a car as he was cycling on the main Kantou-Platres road on Thursday. The vehicle’s driver then sped off.

The cyclist’s body was discovered by another motorist at around 6am on Thursday morning.

Motorcyclist dies in accident that leaves his bike in two pieces – Cyprus Mail

A man died early on Thursday morning after an accident which left his motorbike cut in two.
The fatal accident happened shortly after midnight when Dimitris Alexander Mannardak, 25, a resident of Geroskipou, was driving from Geroskipou to Paphos.

At some point he lost control of the bike and collided with a dividing strip on the road to his right. The motorcycle overturned, rolled onto the asphalt and ended up on a roundabout before coming to a stop.

Due to the severity of the crash the vehicle was cut into two.

The 25-year-old driver who was wearing a helmet was initially conscious. He was taken by ambulance to Paphos general hospital where he was diagnosed with multiple fractures and internal bleeding.

Despite having surgery he died at 3.16am.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Driver sought after cyclist dies in traffic accident (updated) – Cyprus Mail

Panayiotis Hadjinicolas, the cyclist who was killed in an accident on Thursday morning, the second fatal accident of the day, was discovered by a passing driver around fifteen minutes after the crash that cost him his life.

The cyclist, a resident of Limassol, was travelling on the road from Kantou to Platres when a vehicle hit him from behind at around 6am, thrusting the bike onto a protective rail at the side of the road. The cyclist was thrown into a field next to the street and was killed instantly.

When he was found he was taken by ambulance to Limassol hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

 The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and is being sought by police. The public was asked to contact their nearest police station or call the public hotline 1460 if they know anything about the incident.

Two arrested after pensioner dies in traffic incident – in-cyprus.com

An elderly man, who had been in critical condition after being struck by a car in Limassol on Sunday, has died after succumbing to his serious injuries.

Two people, a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Vasilis Stylianou, 76, had been in intensive care at Limassol General Hospital following the traffic incident on Sunday morning on Vasilios Georgiou A Street in Germasogia.

The pensioner was hit by a car, being driven by a 19-year-old driver and his 20-year-old co-passenger, as he was crossing the road.

He was rushed to hospital where doctors say he died at around 2am on Monday morning.

The 19-year-old man and the 20-year-old woman have both been arrested after it emerged that the 19-year-old did not have a driving license and insurance. The 20-year-old woman has been charged with giving a false testimony.

The car belongs to the 20-year-old woman.
