Man killed in crash, motorway closed for hours (update 2) – Cyprus Mail

A motorcyclist was killed early on Tuesday morning in a crash on the Nicosia to Limassol motorway, police said.

The incident happened at around 5.45am near the GSP stadium in Nicosia. The man was rushed to Nicosia general hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the victim was Giorgos Christodoulou, 65, from Larnaca.

Christodoulou’s motorbike was hit from behind by a taxi driven by a Turkish Cypriot, throwing him on the windshield, which was smashed, over the top and the rear windshield, that was also smashed, and onto the tarmac where it appeared, he was hit by a second vehicle.

Christodoulou had been wearing a helmet.

“It appears a vehicle that was following possibly hit him again. This vehicle is sought by police who is asking the public to help find it,” traffic police deputy chief Stelios Panayides said.

The accident forced the closure of the motorway for nearly four hours, causing chaos.

Long queues formed, and police instructed drivers to exit the motorway from the roundabout near the stadium and head to Limassol via the old Nicosia – Limassol road through Latsia.

The accident prompted far-right party Elam to make a political argument, issuing a statement calling for the closure of the crossing points with the north of Cyprus.

“This incident brings back to the limelight the huge problems arising from the opening of the crossing points,” the party said.
