Work on Paphos-Polis highway to be stepped up says mayor | Cyprus Mail

Work for the completion of the first phase of the Paphos-Polis highway has been stepped, local officials said on Wednesday, but Polis is awaiting news on when work will begin at its end.

Polis mayor, Yiotis Papachristofi said that work was progressing as planned but he expected it to be speeded up as heavy machinery was being prepared for use.

He explained that since the summer major earthworks have been carried out, mainly along the first phase of the road – from Ayia Marinouda to Tsada.

“The project under contract is expected to be completed within two years, we expect it to be done,” he said, adding that a request has been sent to the transport minister to receive an answer on the timeline for the second phase.

He noted that they were still awaiting an environmental impact study for the second phase.

Papachristofi argued that the second phase is of crucial importance for his community as it brings Polis closer to the Paphos airport, while reducing the isolation of other neighbouring villages.

The project truly began when diggers broke ground on July 1.

In total, the highway will be 31km long and will be completed in two phases. The entire route starts from Ayia Marinouda and ends at Stroumbi. The project involves the initial construction of a two-lane highway with a length of 15.5km, costing €86,845,010, which will be followed by the road being upgraded to four lane highway.

The first phase includes the construction of a node connecting to the Limassol – Paphos highway, a roundabout in Tsada and one at the termination point after Stroumbi. The construction will also include two tunnels that are 720m long and five bridges, each 290m long, two overpasses and nine underpasses. Finally, because of elevation of the road, additional traffic lanes will be constructed over 12 km.
